The discovery contains oil bearing sandstone layers amounting to a cumulative thickness of approximately 70m at a depth of about 4850m through appraisal drilling in the BM-ES-23 concession, Inpex said.

BM-ES-23 is located 115 km off the coast of the State of Espírito Santo in southeastern Brazil, at 1800-2000m water depth.

The drilling program is included in the appraisal work that has been conducted since 2013, in exploration efforts of new oil and natural gas in the area.  BM-ES-23 follows prior discoveries in January 2015 and October 2014.

Petrobras and its joint venture partners are working to analyze and evaluate the data retrieved from the appraisal well, in addition to the data from the earlier finds, and proceed with the appraisal work, Inpex said.

Petrobras is the operator in the concession with 65% interest. Partners include Inpex, through its subsidiary Inpex Petróleo Santos (15%), and PTTEP (20%).
