OMV's Norway VP said the Wisting discovery in the Norwegian Barents Sea could contain more than 1 billion boe in place.

David Latin stated the figure at an energy conference, according to news agency Reuters, saying that he was confident a development of Wisting, which sits in Arctic waters, could be financially viable.

Output could start in 2024 or 2025, Latin said, though he declined to provide a cost estimate, said Reuters.

In May, OMV announced it had successfully completed drilling and testing of its Central II appraisal well on Wisting.

In September, Norwegian floating production firm Sevan Marine was awarded a study to evaluate use of its cylindrical hull design for use on the Wisting field. Sevan's cylindrical hull design was used on the Goliat development, currently Norway's northernmost producing oilfield and Norway's only producing oilfield in the Barents Sea.

Wisting was discovered 310km offshore, in the Hoop area in the northern part of the Barents Sea on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate estimates the Wisting discovery to contain 241 MMboe of recoverable resources.

Wisting Central II was the first horizontal appraisal well in the Barents Sea. It also set a new drilling record, being the shallowest horizontal offshore well drilled from a floating drilling facility. The well started vertically and was successfully steered into a horizontal orientation within a 250m depth interval. The total well length was 2354m and the horizontal section measures 1402m.

Wisting Central II was the fifth well in the production license (PL) 537, which was awarded in the 20th licensing round in 2009.

Partners in the Wisting discovery are OMV, Norway's Statoil, Japan's Idemitsu and Norwegian state oil firm Petoro.
