Newbuild OCV for North Sea

Two agreements announced today will see subsea services firm DeepOcean take on a newbuild installation vessel and Norwegian shipyard Kleven undertake its largest order to date.

DeepOcean has agreed to a five and a half year charter, starting March 2016, with Norway’s Østensjø Rederi for a newbuild installation vessel.

It will be built by Kleven, under a NOK1.4 billion contract with Østensjø Rederi.

The move gives DeepOcean a dedicated vessel for operation in the subsea umbilicals risers and flowlines segment.

The vessel is to be delivered from Kleven Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway in Q1 2016.

It will be of a SALT 304 design, 149.8m-long, 27m-wide, and with 2300sq m deck space. It has been designed and equipped to suit the North Sea region market, with the fuel-saving, environmentally friendly Siemens BlueDrive PlusC propulsion control technology and DP3 positioning system.

It will come with a 150-ton, dual-tensioner vertical lay system and a 3000-ton carousel below deck.

A 400-ton active heave compensated knuckle boom main crane will have an extended reach and be able to lift 600 tons in double fall mode. It will have accommodation for 140 people.

“We are witnessing a trend of larger and more complex subsea production assets as well as an increase in the number of subsea tie‐backs together with replacement and rejuvenation projects on an ageing subsea infrastructure all requiring larger vessels,” says Mads Bardsen, president of DeepOcean.

DeepOcean said, during the past six months, it has strengthened its SURF organization in the UK and Norway. It recently opened a new office in Westhill, Aberdeen.

The last two years has seen it hire about 350 new staff, make upgrades to its owned and chartered vessel fleet, increased its number of ROVs to 33 and trenchers to 17.

DeepOcean currently operates 11 vessels in the North Sea region.

Kleven has 13 vessels on order, at a total value of around NOK 7.9 billion.
