FES designing Moho Nord swivels

FES International has been awarded a £598,000 contract to supply four high-pressure fluid swivels for Total's subsea Moho Nord project in Congo, West Africa.

The Moho Nord project is to develop major discoveries, Marine 2 and 3, in the upper north of the Moho Bilondo license, about 75km off the coast, in 650-1100m water depth.

FES is providing the swivels to be used as part of a workover riser system. Their purpose will be to allow for relative rotations between the riser and the workover rig. The swivel will therefore maintain the same orientation relative to the drill floor.

The key engineering challenge will be to design the swivels for the high internal pressure, whilst working at a combined axial load and bending moment.

Ian Latimer, co-founder and technical director at FES International, who is directing the project, which is due to complete in May 2014, said: “This is a significant contract win for us and what a great way to end what has been a big year for FES. We have had a fantastic run of contract wins in recent months and Aker Solutions is an impressive name to add to the client list.”

FES International provides its global customers with a range of swivel systems including production, gas, hydraulic & utility, chemical injection, single, in-line and multi-path designs.

The business, which has currently invested £700,000 in research and development projects, is planning to unveil a new swivel product range by next April.
