Keppel delivers Pemex jackup

Mexican national oil company, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) took delivery of its first of two KFELS B Class jackup rigs from Singapore’s Keppel FELS.

The Yunuen jackup. From Keppel.

The Yunuen jackup is designed to operate in water depths of up to 350ft and drill to depths of 30,000ft.

Keppel says Yunuen is equipped with an advanced and fully automated high capacity rack and pinion jacking system, and self-positioning fixation system and has accommodations with full amenities for 120 people.

The Yunuen, in addition to the second jackup Keppel building for Pemex, will join another six KFELS B Class rigs that Pemex has chartered from drilling contractors for deployment in offshore Mexico.

“This is the seventh KFELS B Class jackup that will work in Mexico and is testament to the strength of this design for owners and operators in the region,” says Chow Yew Yuen, Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) CEO. “We have a second KFELS B Class jackup rig being built directly for Pemex and another seven for Mexican drilling contractors that will be chartered to Pemex.”

“As Mexico’s exploration and production program continues to grow, high specification and high performance jackup rigs like the Yunuen will be vital in our bid to increase oil production,” says Gustavo Hernández Garcia, Pemex E&P director general. “The KFELS B Class rigs have proven to be robust, efficient and economical, and the six that are currently under our charter have been performing excellently.”

In October, Keppel O&M signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with PEMEX Exploración y Producción (PEP) and PMI Norteamérica, S.A. de C.V. to develop, own and operate a US$400 million yard facility in Mexico specializing in construction, maintenance, and repair of platforms and other larger vessels. Under the MOU's first phase, Keppel will construct six KFELS B class jackup drilling rigs for PEP through their subsidiary Offshore Technology Development.

Last month, Keppel O&M’s subsidiary, Keppel AmFELS delivered the Coatzacoalcos jackup rig to Mexico’s Perforadora Central S.V. De C.V. that will be chartered by Pemex for work offshore Mexico.
