The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has granted Statoil a drilling permit for wildcat well 7435/12-1 in the Barents Sea.

Map of 7435/12-1, from NPD.

Well 7435/12-1 in production license (PL) 859 will be drilled from the Songa Enabler drilling facility following completion of drilling of wildcat well 7325/4-1 for Statoil in PL 855.

The well will be drilled about 320km northeast of 7225/3-1 (Norvarg), about 365km northeast of discovery well 7324/8-1 (Wisting) in PL 537 and about 415km from the coast.

PL 859 was awarded in the 23rd licensing round in 2016. This is the first well to be drilled in the license.

The area in this license consists of the blocks 7335/1, 7335/2, 7335/3, 7336/1, 7434/7, 7434/8, 7434/9, 7435/9, 7435/10, 7435/11, 7435/12 and 7436/10.

The permit is contingent upon the operator having secured all other permits and consents required by other authorities before the drilling activity starts.

Statoil is the operator with an ownership interest of 30%. The other licensees are Chevron Norge (20%), Petoro (20%), ConocoPhillips Scandinavia (15%) and Lundin Norway (15%).
