Petronas awards contract offshore Sarawak

Block 316 offshore Sarawak, MalaysiaOn 27 Sept 2013, Malaysia's Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) announced the award of a new Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning (EPCIC) contract to a joint venture between France's Technip and Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd. MMHE is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (MHB).

Technip and MMHE will develop two gas fields in Block SK316, about180km (111mi.) north of Bintulu, Sarawak, in water 104m deep, South China Sea. Petronas drilled the NC3 discovery well on Block SK316 in early 2011 and estimated 2.6 Tcf reserves. The company went on to drill the NC8SW-1 well in September 2011 and estimated recoverable gas reserves of more than 450 Bcf. Petronas then drilled the Kasawari-1 gas well in November 2011, with more than 5 Tcf gas in place and 3 Tcf estimated recoverable reserves. In February 2012, the Kasawari-1 well tested 29MMcfd.

The Technip-MMHE joint venture had earlier participated in the front-end engineering design (FEED) competition for Block SK316, with subsequent rollover to EPCIC execution. Two other companies, Berlian McDermott Sdn Bhd and Saipem (M) Sdn Bhd, participateed in the FEED competition.

The new EPCIC contract includes a central processing platform and a bridge-linked wellhead platform, which will be constructed at MMHE’s fabrication yard at Pasir Gudang in Johor, Malaysia, as well as a 75-km pipeline, which will be installed by one of Technip's pipe-laying vessels.Technip's part of the contract is worth €250 to €500 million.
