STX launches ice-class LNG carrier

SCF Melampus ice-class LNG carrier launched from STX in South KoreaSouth Korea's STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. launched SCF Melampus, the first of two ice-class LNG carriers ordered by Sovcomflot OJSC. The first vessel is to be delivered in late 2014; the second in early 2015. STX signed the $400million contract to build the two 170,200cu m, membrane-type LNG carriers for Russia's SCF Sovcomflot on 31 May 2011.

The ship will sail under Liberian flag and will be classed by Lloyds Register and the Russian Maritime Register.

State-of-the-art gas carriers of the Atlanticmax type are fitted with the equipment needed to operate in low temperatures, to provide year-round gas transportation from all existing LNG terminals to the global market.

As of early November, the gas fleet of Sovcomflot consists of 10 LNG and LPG units deployed for Russian and international projects (Sakhalin-2, Tangguh). In addition, four gas carriers are being built under long-term, time-charter agreements with the largest oil and gas companies – Shell and Gazprom.

OAO Sovcomflot is Russia’s largest shipping company and provides seaborne energy transportation and offshore services, supporting continental shelf exploration and oil & gas production. The SCF fleet includes 156 vessels with a combined deadweight of around 12 million tonnes. One-third of the vessels have a high ice-class rating. Sovcomflot Group specializes in hydrocarbon transportation from regions with challenging ice conditions. Sovcomflot supports large-scale offshore energy projects in Russia and the rest of the world, including: Sakhalin-I, Sakhalin-II, Varandey, Prirazlomnoye, Tangguh, Escobar, and Peregrino.

The company is registered in Saint-Petersburg and has representative offices in Moscow, Novorossiysk, Murmansk, Vladivostok, London, Limassol, Madrid, Singapore, and Dubai.
