Brazil's interim president, Michel Temer, has named a new CEO for the country's national oil company Petrobras.
Petrobras announced today that it was informed Thursday, 19 May, of the decision to appoint Pedro Parente, an engineer, to Petrobras' board and to the position of CEO.
Parente, a former energy minister, will replace current CEO Aldemir Bendine, a Banco do Brasil executive who was appointed to the role in February 2015, following the exit of Maria das Gracas Silva Foster.
The same week in 2015 that Foster resigned amid scandals at the Brazilian national, five of the company’s directors also left with her.
On 23 May, the Sindipetro-NF workers union sent a letter to the board of director at Petrobras, Luiz Nelson Guedes de Carvalho, asking that Pedro Parente not be named as the CEO of the company.
"The goal is to alert the board members to the risks of having at the helm of Petrobras a manager who in the past has caused losses of more than $1 billion to the company and to top it responds to action for improper conduct," the union said.Earlier this month, Temer appointed Fernando Bezerra Filho as the country’s new mines and energy minister.
Petrobras said its board of directors will meet on 23 May to consider the move.
"Any new information on the subject will be timely announced to the market," Petrobras said in a release.
