Petrobras hits at Carcará

Brazilian giant Petrobras encountered light oil pay at the second appraisal well at its Carcará pre-salt discovery offshore Rio de Janeiro, according to partner Queiroz Galvão Exploração e Produção (QGEP).

ODN II. From Odebrecht.

Well 3-SPS-105 (3-BRSA-1290-SPS / Carcará Norte), is located at Block BM-S-8 in the Santos basin, approximately 229km off the coast of São Paulo State and around 5km north of the discovery well. The well is in 2072m water depth.

Carcará Norte established the extension to the north of the discovery of light oil (31°API) in carbonate reservoirs of excellent quality, at 5820m, just below the salt layer, QGEP said.

The well, which is still being drilled with Odebrecht Oil & Gas' ODN II drillship, found a 358m oil column in continuous and connected reservoirs. Pressure data from the well confirmed that the accumulation is the same one found by the 2012 discovery well.

Carcará Norte reached a depth of 6178m and the joint venture plans to continue with drilling to the base of the reservoir, as the oil-water contact has yet to be identified.

A formation test is planned to evaluate the reservoir’s productivity, and drilling plans continue for the first appraisal well, Carcará Noroeste, this year.

Carcará Norte was spudded in January. The Carcará discovery was found in 2012, and encountered a 470m column of 31ºAPI oil in pre-salt microbial carbonates with excellent porosity and permeability.

Petrobras is the operator of Block BM-S-8 with 66% interest. Partners include QGEP (10%), Petrogal Brasil (14%) and Barra Energia do Brasil Petróleo e Gás (10%).
