The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has granted Lundin Petroleum subsidiary Lundin Norway AS a drilling permit to drill a wildcat well in the Barents Sea.
The company will drill well 7220/6-3 in Production License 609 using the Leiv Eiriksson semisubmersible. The well will be drilled about 18km northwest of the discovery well, 7220/6-2 R.
Lundin Norway AS is the operator with an ownership interest of 40% and the licensees are Idemitsu Petroleum Norge AS with 30% and DEA Norge AS with 30%.
Production license 609 – awarded in 2011’s 21st licensing round - consists of the blocks/parts of blocks 7220/6, 7220/9, 7220/11, 7220/12 and 7221/4. The permit is contingent upon the operator securing the other permits and consents required by other authorities prior to commencing drilling activities.
Earlier this week, Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority granted Lundin permission to drill the well. Lundin believes its future lies in the Barents Sea, where it is targeting an all-electric development for Alta Gohta.
