The post-salt discovery was made while drilling the 3-BRSA-1259-ESS well at 1043m water depth in the Malombe discovery evaluation plan.

According to Petrobras, logging confirmed gas in reservoirs at a depth of about 2880m. The well reached a total depth of 2996m.

The Petrobras-operated consortium (89.89%) will proceed with a formation test with partner Repsol Sinopec (11.11%).

Petrobras operates and has a 65% interest in the BM-ES-23 concession also located in the deepwater Espírito Santo basin that covers about 550sq km, with partners INPEX (15%) and Thailand’s PTTEP (20%).

In September, Shell’s Brazilian subsidiary, Shell Brasil Petroleo Ltda., announced it was selling 20% of its participating interest to PTTEP. The joint venture plans to conduct exploration and appraisal drilling during 2014 to 2015.

In July, Petrobras awarded Saipem two contracts worth approximately US$450 million for a four-year extension for the Cidade de Vitória FPSO lease contractin the Espírito Santo basin at its Golfinho Field and for modification and upgrading of the leased FPSO vessel. Saipem’s Cidade de Vitória has been under a lease and operation contract to Petrobras since 2005, that has been extended until 2022.
