Wintershall to tieback Skarfjell

Wintershall is to develop the Skarfjell field in the Norwegian North Sea via a subsea tieback to the nearby Engie-operated Gjøa platform.

Skarfjell is in the northeastern North Sea, about 20km southwest of the Gjøa platform, and some 130km northwest of Bergen.

Based on Wintershall’s proposed plan, hydrocarbons from the Skarfjell reservoir would be sent from a subsea template to the Gjøa platform for processing and export. Gjøa would also provide gas lift services to the field and water injection for pressure support to a second template.

The Gjøa concept for Skarfjell will include a new 1000-ton topside module for handling the Skarfjell production. New risers will be installed for production, gas lift, water injection and umbilical, according to partner Engie.

Gjøa is a semisubmersible production unit, and has full processing and export capabilities. It is operated with power from shore, through a 100km-long submarine cable from Mongstad.

"The tieback of Skarfjell production to the Gjøa-platform is in line with our strategy to make the installation a hub for future fields in the area and to extend the lifetime of the Gjøa facility," says ENGIE E&P Norge Managing Director Cedric Osterrieth.

Wintershall and its PL418 license partners will submit the concept select report to the authorities by 16 February.

Late last month, Wintershall delayed its Skarfjell concept selection, in order to cut 40% of the costs from the project. Production is anticipated to start in 2021, the German operator said at the time.

The majority of the Skarfjell discovery is in license PL 418, with a possible extension into PL 378.

Wintershall Norge is the operator of PL 418 with 35% stake. Partners incclude Capricorn Norge (part of Cairn Energy, 20%), Bayerngas Norge (20%), Edison Norge (15%), and DEA Norge (10%).

In PL 378, Wintershall Norge is the operator with 62.5% stake. Partners are Capricorn Norge (20%), and and Repsol Norge (17.5%).
