Andreas Chrysostomou has been appointed the 111th President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) at its annual general meeting on 21 March 2013. Richard Vie has been appointed President Elect.
Andreas Chrysostomou takes over the reins of office from Malcolm Vincent. Chrysostomou’s first public task as President was his speech the following day, 22 March, at the IMarEST 110th Annual Dinner at The Guildhall in the heart of the City of London, attended by about 400 IMarEST members and their guests representing the global engineering, science and technology sectors of the maritime industry. Television presenter and broadcaster Monty Halls, a former Royal Marines Officer, now an explorer and writer, was the after-dinner speaker.
"I am delighted to have been appointed the 111th President of the Institute which has over 15,000 members in over a hundred countries, and 50 active branches around the world, and exciting expansion plans,” says Andreas Chrysostomou. “Naturally, I would like to pay tribute to Malcolm Vincent whose work on behalf of, the Institute and its members around the world has been inspiring. I know how much he has enjoyed his year in office, and look forward to furthering some of the initiatives that he started during his year in office.
“Global growth and expansion are of vital importance to our Institute. We need to fully integrate the international presence of IMarEST to transform it from a UK organisation with overseas members to a truly global organisation.
“We have some exciting and challenging objectives, and I look forward to seeing them implemented in the coming year. We aim to expand the international profile of the IMarEST within the marine industry, academia and governments, promoting membership, events and publications where applicable.
“Then too we need to promote the benefits of the Institute in key markets, ensuring that the global expansion and influence the Institute has globally is understood within industry and by maritime policy makers. I am committed to personally leading a strong campaign to attract new members, indeed I will be issuing a challenge to the rest of the IMarEST’s leadership to follow my lead!”
Andreas Chrysostomou has been Senior Marine Surveyor and Head of the Maritime Policy, Multilateral Affairs and Standards Division in the Department of Merchant Shipping, Government of the Republic of Cyprus since 2004 and Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) since 2003.
He received a Bachelor of Engineering with Honors in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and has served as Counsellor Maritime Affairs for the Cyprus High Commission in London and alternate Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the IMO.
On the international stage, Mr Chrysostomou has worked with UN agencies and other forums including UNCTAD, ILO, COPASS-SARSAT, the International Oil Pollution Fund and the International Mobile Satellite Organization. He has presented papers and chaired seminars and conferences around the globe and was previously a member of the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University (WMU).
In 2011, Chysostomou received the acknowledgment of his peers with the 2011 Award for outstanding contribution to sustainable shipping and was presented with the Outstanding Public Service Award by the US Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard for his contribution to international shipping, and in March 2013, was awarded the Greenship Technology Leading Personality of the Decade Award.
