Kenya well Sunbird-1 inconclusive

Published

The Sunbird-1 exploration well in area L10A offshore southern Kenya is to be plugged and abandoned after finding hydrocarbons.

Pancontinental Oil & Gas, which holds 18.75% WI in the BG Group-operated well, said while hydrocarbons were found, the vertical extend of the hydrocarbon column has not yet been determined due difficulty assessing wireline logs up an upper section, due to extensive drilling fluid losses into the “high porous and permeable parts” of the upper section of the Miocene Pinnacle Reef reservoir.

The well was drilled using the drillship Deepsea Metro-1. It reached a final depth of 2850m in 723m water depth.

Hydrocarbon samples were recovered for detailed analyses. The full nature of the hydrocarbons will not be known until geochemical and other analyses have been completed.
