First gas fed at Santos GLNG

After two and a half years, Santos Gladstone Liquefied Natural Gas (GLNG) fed natural gas into its 420km gas transmission pipeline for the first time using its primary compressor station in the Fairview field in southwest Queensland.

The US$18.5 billion venture will convert coal seam natural gas (CSG) to LNG for export to global markets.

Once fully commissioned and in operation, the pipeline will transport up to 40MMcm/d of natural gas from Santos GLNG’s gas fields to its gas liquefaction plant on Curtis Island, off Gladstone, where it will be cooled to minus 161 degrees Celsius and shipped to customers as LNG.

Santos GLNG has welded more than 36,000 segments of 1.05m diameter pipe, weighing in excess of 250,000-tonne in total.

Santos GLNG says the pipeline will now be progressively filled with gas, section by section, with first gas into the Santos GLNG plant scheduled for later this year. Santos GLNG goes on to say that once exports to international markets begin in 2015, they will be transporting the cleanest of the fossil fuel alternatives in the world.

“Construction began in 2012, and since then we’ve worked more than 6 million hours on this part of our project,” says Rod Duke Santos GLNG VP downstream. “We’re leading the way in building a new and exciting industry for Queensland, which is already delivering and will continue to deliver significant economic benefits for our state for many years to come.”

In September, the final two modules arrived for the Santos GLNG project. The modules were built in the Philippines and make up the two LNG processing units that will convert natural gas into liquid.

Santos GLNG is a joint venture between Santos (30%), Petronas (27.5%), Total (27.5%) and Kogas (15%).
