Italian ship designer and builder Fincantieri will today (26 March) outline its new drillship design, Proxima.

Proxima is a new ultra deepwater drillship capable of drilling to 50,000ft total depth in water depth down to 12,000ft.

The vessel's design includes an alternative type of drilling tower, comprising two cylindrically shaped telescopic towers and what the company describes as the largest open drillfloor on the market, incorporating two moon pools. which Fincantieri says will make drilling faster and improve the vessel's efficiency.

The drillship's drilltower lifting capacity will be 3.3 million lbs with 4.5 million lbs riser tensioners. It will have two 20,000 psi blow out preventers and five 2200 HP mud pumps. It will also be able to accommodate up to 250 people, says Fincantieri.

Fincantieri is discussing the design at the Offshore Mediterranean Conference in Ravenna (OMC 2015).
