Lloyds Register selected for Johan Sverdrup work

Lloyd’s Register Consulting secured a framework agreement in risk assessment and safety studies for Statoil's Johan Sverdrup project on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Under the agreement, Lloyds Register Consulting will provide risk management support to companies involved in developing Johan Sverdrup.

The project is an extension of the company’s collaboration with Aker Solutions from its initial front end engineering and design (FEED) phase project on Johan Sverdrup.

In the detailed engineering phase, the total risk assessment study will cover dedicated HAZID workshops to identify and analyze major hazards. It will include in-depth risk analysis relating to the field centre, processing platform, living quarter platform, the drilling platform, and riser platform. The work will also oversee key areas including installation, hook-up, and commissioning amongst other stages of this engineering phase.

The expertise provided by Lloyd’s Register Consulting will also quantify total risk levels for personnel and provide expertise in to the designs for accidental loads. The company’s risk experts will actively provide input to the Johan Sverdrup safety strategy.

Jørgen Bartnes, Project Manager from Lloyd’s Register Consulting says: “As we’re already deeply involved in the project and have a unique insight into the specific risk drivers and challenges for the field centre, we are able to ensure continuity and knowledge sharing.”

Lloyd’s Register Consulting will lead on sharing relevant information between parties involved the project and also assist with providing technical resources and back office support.

Bartnes highlights: “To provide the optimum transfer of our insight and hands-on experience achieved during the initial FEED phase, we will be deploying the same team of technical experts for the detailed engineering phase. This not only translates into safety-intelligent solutions, it also realizes cost-efficiency without degrading on quality.”

The Johan Sverdrup discovery is one of the largest oil discoveries ever made on the Norwegian continental shelf and will prolong the life of the Norwegian oil industry for several decades. The discovery extends over an area of approximately 200sq km on the Utsira High in the central part of the North Sea and will be developed to reach first oil at the end of 2019.

With anticipated start-up in 2019, an estimated peak production of over 550,000 b/d, and a lifetime of half a century, the giant Johan Sverdrup field is expected to create value for owners and society beyond 2050.

The work by Lloyd’s Register Consulting will be performed to the Norwegian regulations, NORSOK standards, Statoil's governing documents, and petroleum industry’s best practice. Statoil specific risk tolerance criteria, tools and methods will be also applied.
