Vessel builder VARD, vessel operator DOF and subsea firm Technip celebrated the christening of the newbuild Skandi Açu pipelay support vessel (PLSV) at Dutch offshore equipment manufacturer and engineer Huisman in the Netherlands.

The Skandi Açu PLSV was designed specifically for installation of umbilicals, flexible flowlines and risers offshore Brazil.

VARD was in charge of the design and construction of the vessel. Huisman was awarded the contract to deliver the 650-tonne flex-lay system and the 2500-tonne and 1500-tonne underdeck carousels.

Technip has been reducing its fleet, amid the industry downturn, from 36 at the end of 2013 to a planned 23.
