Santos began drilling the AAL-4X appraisal well, offshore Indonesia using the PT Apexindo's Raniworo jackup.

AAL-4X is located in the West Natuna basin in the Northwest Natuna license and sits in 72m water depth

Santos is drilling the well at 200m total vertical depth subsea in a 24in hole, and will be drilled to a total depth of 1232m, which is expected to take approximately 48 days to complete, according to joint venture partner AWE.

The Northwest Natuna production-sharing contract offshore Indonesia also includes the Ande Ande Lumut (AAL) oil project.

The AAL project comprises of the K Sand reservoir with 101 MMbbl of gross recoverable oil, and the underlying G Sand reservoir. The AAL-4X appraisal well is targeting the G Sand reservoir, which is estimated to contain 289 MMbbl of oil in place with 36 MMbbl of gross recoverable oil.

Appraisal of the G Sand will facilitate the preparation of plan of development for this resource, AWE said, which could be developed in conjunction with the already approved K Sand development.

Santos is the operator of the Northwest Natuna license with 50% stake. Partner AWE holds the remaining 50%.
