Petrobras encountered oil at the Poraquê Alto well, marking the company’s first commercial oil discovery in the pre-salt layer of the Marlim Sul area offshore Rio de Janiero state, Brazil.

Poraquê Alto (well 6-MLS-233-RJS), is 115km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in the Campo de Marlim Sul area, which is in the Campos pre-salt basin, and is in 1107m water depth.
The well reached a final depth of 4568m, where Petrobras says current data indicates carbonate reservoirs with good porosity and permeability characteristics, about 420m deep and 45m thick with oil.
Petrobras says the result "demonstrates the potential for new discoveries in mature basins, with production infrastructure already in place."
Earlier this week, SBM Offshore reported that the company sold the Marlim Sul floating production and storage offloading (FPSO) unit for recycling. The FPSO had been leased to Petrobras on the Marlim Sul field since 2004, alongside other production facilities in the field.
The Marlim Sul FPSO was decommissioned in April 2016, following the end of an eight-year contract, which was extended by 26 months in 2012. Production ceased in 2015.
The Marlim Sul field was discovered in November 1987 in water depths ranging from 800-2600m. The 600sq km Marlim Sul field lies 120km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
