Samsung Engineering has appointed Michel Lainé as chief operating officer of its newly established offshore segment, effective December 20, 2012.

Lainé’s career in offshore began in 1982 with ETPM, followed by Technip and Bouygues Offshore S.A. (acquired by Saipem). Since 2002, he held key management positions such as managing director of Saipem Indonesia and Saipem Singapore, as well as chairman and chief executive officer of Saipem S.A.(France).

Lainé’s in-depth knowledge gained from the world's leading offshore companies will bring Samsung Engineering a wealth of expertise to oil and gas offshore projects ranging from wellheads, large-scale production platforms, topsides, FPSOs and FLNGs.

The new appointment supplements Samsung Engineering’s move to break into the offshore market. In October 2012, the company formed AMEC Samsung Oil and Gas LLC (ASOG), to bring together AMEC’s world-renowned design engineering capability and extensive experience in offshore projects with Samsung’s leading project management expertise and shipbuilding technology.

Lainé received a BA in civil engineering at Ecole Spéciale des Travaux Publics (Paris), a MA in civil works at University Paul Sabatier (Toulouse), and a diploma in steel structure engineering at Centre des Hautes Etudes de la Construction (Paris).
