Karoon spudded its Emu-1 exploration well located within Blocks S-M-1102 and S-M-1037 in the Santos Basin off Brazil, the company announced on 11 February 2013.

Karoon said the Emu-1 will have multiple targets including the Santonian, Campanian and Miocene geological levels. Drilling is expected to continue through early April.

Karoon’s Santos Basin Blocks are located 112km off the coast of the Santa Catarina, south of Rio de Janeiro, in water depths measuring 400m.

Last month, Karoon announced it had discovered a 25m light oil column in the Eocene reservoir at its nearby Kangaroo-1 exploration well on Block S-M-1101.

Karoon currently holds 100% operating interest in Santos Basin blocks S-M-1101, S-M-1102, S-M-1037 and S-M-1165. A recent divestment of 35% to Pacific Rubiales is subject to approval by Brazilian regulators Agencia Nacional do Petroleo (ANP).
