Eni's Vietnam subisidiary, Eni Vietnam BV, has spud the Ca Ngu-1 exploration well off central Vietnam, partner KrisEnergy announced.
The Ca Ngu-1 well, which is being drilled by the Songa Mercur semisubmersible rig, is located in the Gulf of Tonkin in Block 120. Eni plans to drill the well to a total vertical depth of 1,500m subsea. Water depth at the well is approximately 270m.
Eni acquired stake in block 120 in June 2012, picking up 50% interest in Blocks 105-110/04 and 120, which are located in the the Song Hong and Phu Khanh basins. Eni estimates that the Song Hong basin contains 10% of Vietnam's hydrocarbon resources, which are thought to be natural gas.
Block 120 covers an area of 8,574sq km overlying the Quang Ngai graben and the Tri Ton horst where water depths range from 50-1,100m. The graben connects the Song Hong and Qiongdongnan basins in the north to the Phu Khanh basin in the south.
KrisEnergy holds a 25% working interest in Block 120. Neon Energy (Song Hong) Pty Ltd holds the remaining 25%.
