Produced water monitoring tool launched

Oil and gas chemical monitoring firm LUX Assure is to present a new produced water monitoring technology at the ITF Technology Showcase in Aberdeen this week.

MOTEYE has been developed to monitor produced water being used for reinjection. It was created in collaboration with Heriot-Watt University, which provided expertise in data analysis and software development.

Funding was provided by a £73,000 grant from the UK’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board, in a project that ran for 15 months.

Oilfield fluids produced during oil and gas extraction can be complex, often containing oil, solids and treatment chemicals. These components can lead to complications when being re-injected into a well. The more that is known about the content of this fluid, the better it can be managed. Current monitoring of the fluid is laborious, requiring skilled personnel and uses multiple pieces of complex instrumentation.

MOTEYE was created to simplify analysis of the multitude of components in produced water, enabling more effective and cost-efficient management of fluid.

Charles Cruickshank, LUX Assure's, says:  “We are delighted to be attending ITF and look forward to presenting MOTEYE, which provides a new front in reinjection monitoring technology. As more than 70% of the world’s oil and gas production comes from fields more than 30 years old, approaches such as produced water reinjection are growing in significance, and MOTEYE will be able to simplify monitoring processes, saving operators time and money.

“By providing the industry with a single, straightforward tool, we hope that MOTEYE can standardize fluid monitoring to improve enhanced oil recovery around the world.”

MOTEYE is expected to begin field trials in 2015.

LUX Assure will be exhibiting at ITF, being held 5 March at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, and will have personnel on-hand to explain the technology and its uses.
