Accommodation modules reach Perenco Rio del Rey

This month, Jumbo Javelin transported two massive accommodation modules from Trogir, Croatia, to Limbe, Cameroon, in one go for Perenco Rio del Rey. The basin has seen recent development activity since Cameroon's state oil company, National Hydrocarbons Corp., offered a licensing round for three offshore blocks — Bomana, Lungahe, and Ndian River — all in the Rio Del Rey basin.

During the transport, Jumbo engineers faced a variety of challenges, such as draft restrictions in Trogir and the extremely small lifting clearance during the loading and unloading operations. Although Jumbo Javelin regularly transports bulky and heavy cargo with its combined lifting capacity of 1800 tons and a deck space of 3100sq m, the company was challenged in this case by the extremely small lifting clearance of less than 0.5m. Jumbo was successful after carrying out extensive engineering to prepare the crew and the vessel for the loading and discharging of the two accommodation units.

The two units are four stories high and measure 20m by 30m. Jumbo engineers conducted a 3D study to ascertain that both accommodation modules would fit on deck by utilizing three lifting beams. The entire operation was carried out in accordance with the applicable GL Noble Denton rules.

At the discharge port, the accommodation modules had to be directly placed on a jackup oil rig offshore Cameroon. Due to the limited lifting height and tidal restrictions, the rig was ballasted at a draft of 2.5m in the water. Also, the distance between the jackup and Jumbo Javelin had to be very precise. A custom-made bumper system installed on the rig’s deck ensured that the accommodation blocks could be placed on their final supports.

The weight of the forward module was 414.8 tonnes without rigging and 511.0 tonnes including 96.0 tonnes of rigging. The aft module weighed 355.7 tonnes wihout rigging and 451 tonnes including 95.0 tonnes of rigging.
