Reinvention opportunity for SPE Offshore Europe 2017

The organizers of SPE Offshore Europe have announced the chairman for the 2017 edition of the biennial event – and she says now is the time for the industry to reinvent itself.

Catherine MacGregor (pictured, right), President Europe & Africa, Schlumberger said SPE Offshore Europe 2017 will be the place where the industry will come together and shape its future for the next 10 years.

OE (Offshore Engineer) magazine has also once again been chosen to be the official media partner and Show Daily publisher for SPE Offshore Europe 2017, continuing a 30-plus year long relationship with the show's organizers.

The event is due to take place Aberdeen from 5-8 September 2017, when the industry will have faced one of the longest and most severe downturns in decades.

“We are in a position where operators, service companies and other stakeholders need to find new ways of working together to build sustainable business models,” MacGregor said. “Visibility is limited on the timing of market recovery but it is inevitable as the balance of supply and demand eventually becomes tighter. The longer that exploration and production investment stays below production replacement needs, the sharper the recovery will have to be to meet future demands. Now is the time for the industry to reinvent itself to be ready for growth, having answered the cost and efficiency questions exposed during this downturn.

“SPE Offshore Europe 2017 will provide a great opportunity for visitors to understand how new ways to collaborate are being implemented, to learn from ongoing examples and to meet potential partners. We will share inspirational examples of innovations and technology developments, more cost effective processes and new business models. The knowledge and technology being shared will shape the future of the industry for the next 10 years.”

Janeen Judah, 2017 SPE President, said: “We are very pleased that Catherine, with her wealth of European and global experience and knowledge, has agreed to chair SPE Offshore Europe 2017. Catherine and the SPE committee are currently putting the program together which will be announced later this year.”

Vasyl Zhygalo, portfolio director, Offshore Europe Partnership commented: “The program at SPE Offshore Europe 2017 will provide visitors with the technology and knowledge they need as the industry reinvents itself for the future. SPE Offshore Europe supports the vision for the North East of Scotland to be one of the top three centers globally for oil and gas technology development and it promises a platform in Aberdeen to showcase and share this expertise with more than 55,000 estimated attendees from around the world.”

Going strong since 1973

SPE Offshore Europe has been held every two years in Aberdeen since 1973. In 2015 the event attracted over 1500 international exhibitors and 55,000 attendees from more than 100 countries. SPE Offshore Europe 2017 will be held at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Speaking of OE's ongoing support of the event, Shaun Wymes, chairman of AtComedia (OE’s publisher), said: “We are delighted to partner, once again, with SPE Offshore Europe, one of the most important oil and gas events in the world. We have been through many industry cycles together and we are extremely hopeful that by mid-2017 our market will once again be on the ascent.”

Zhygalo said: “SPE Offshore Europe is delighted to announce that Offshore Engineer will be our Official Media Partner for the 2017 event, continuing our long-standing partnership. The audience of SPE Offshore Europe and Offshore Engineer have valuable synergies and it’s for this reason, along with their global coverage and within Aberdeen that we are looking forward to working with Offshore Engineer once again for 2017. Offshore Engineer will also be the Publisher of the Official Show Preview, Official Show Daily and Official Show Review for the event.”

Catherine MacGregor was appointed president of Schlumberger, Europe and Africa in 2013. Over a 20 year career with Schlumberger, MacGregor has held positions in the UK, Europe, Far East and US. Previously, she was president of Schlumberger Wireline from 2009, and Schlumberger vice president human resources from 2007 to 2009. She joined Schlumberger in 1995 as a field engineer in the Republic of Congo. She then held various field operations positions in the UK and the US. MacGregor graduated from Ecole Centrale Paris in 1995 with a Master of Science in Energetics and Heat Transfer.
