Statoil has made a minor gas/condensate discovery near the Krafla discovery in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.
The discovery was made on the Beerenberg prospect well 30/11-13, on production license 272, which contains the Krafla and Askja discoveries.
The well was drilled 8km southeast of the Krafla discovery and about 27km south of the Oseberg South facility and found 1-3 MMcu m of recoverable oil equivalents, according to the NPD.
The well follows a small discovery on the previous well in the area, targeting the Askja South East prospect. This was estimated to contain 0.7-2.5 MMcu m of recoverable oil equivalents.
Statoil will now continue its drilling in the license, using the Songa Delta semisubmersible, to drill wildcat well 30/11-14.
The results will be used to help draw up a development project in the area, focusing on Krafla.
