Energistics, the upstream oil and gas open standards consortium, has published the Unit of Measure (UOM) Standard V1.0. This new standard includes the Unit of Measure Dictionary and the Unit Symbol Grammar Specification.
This standard is a harmonization of several industry UOM standards, including: POSC Unit of Measure V2.2, RP66 V1 and V2, and OpenSpirit Unit Dictionary V3.0. In addition, the Professional Petroleum Data Management (PPDM) and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) contributed to the development.
The Energistics Unit of Measure Work Group generated the unit names, symbols, derived units and conversion factors with an eye towards the ability to easily implement it in software and databases, but not so much for other uses like writing academic papers. There are other resources available to aid in preparing manuscripts. The units in this standard are intended to be those used by the industry or which reasonably would be expected to be encountered.
Jay Hollingsworth, Chief Technical Officer of Energistics, said, "The Unit of Measure Standard V1.0 is intended to provide the necessary components and guidelines to improve accuracy and consistency of implementation, usage, exchange and conversion of units of measure related to all upstream activities."
