BP awards Trinidad jackup contracts

BP Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) has awarded a new contract and contract extension for two Rowan jackup rigs for drilling programs offshore Trinidad and Tobago.

Jackup Rowan EXL II has been awarded a one-year, five-well drilling program scheduled to begin in the 1Q 2018. The rig is available until the start of this new contract. Jackup Joe Douglas has received a one-year contract extension for a four-well drilling program, followed by a priced option to extend for one additional well, Rowan reported in its 19 October fleet status report. Rowan did not disclose the day rates for the two contracts.

Trinidad and Tobago will be a key player in BP’s pivot towards natural gas, regional president Norman Christie said in an interview in the August issue of BP magazine. In August, BP brought the Juniper field development project offshore Trinidad online, one of seven major projects the company had planned to bring on production this year. The US$2 billion project marks BP’s first subsea development offshore Trinidad, and is the newest large project to start up in Trinidad in several years.

In June, BP sanctioned the Angelin natural gas project offshore Trinidad, as well as two significant gas discoveries. The Angelin project will consist of a new platform 60km (37mi) off the southeast coast of Trinidad in about 65m (213ft) water depth. The development will include four wells and will have a production capacity of some 600 MMcf/d. Gas from Angelin will flow to the Serrette platform hub via a new 21km (13mi) pipeline. Drilling is set to start in Q3 2018, with first gas from Angelin expected in Q1 2019.
