Lumiflon Topcoats: Extending the Life of Oil Rigs

Coatings formulated with Lumiflon Feve resins are ideal for structures like oil rigs and other parts and components located outdoors or exposed to temperature extremes. Feve resins provide excellent corrosion protection and guard against UV rays, wind, rain, chemicals, dirt and petroleum products and offer significant lifecycle cost advantages over standard polyurethane and polysiloxane coatings.

Lumiflon-based coatings can be formulated to last for 30 to 60 years. The expected maintenance of a standard polyurethane topcoat in this time frame is two to three repainting cycles. Typically, oil rigs are difficult to coat due to limited access and the high cost of downtime during painting operations. Additional costs of repainting include painting crew labor and staging costs, which are far higher offshore than onshore, environmental costs and emissions and CO2 from equipment.

Lumiflon is the first solvent-soluble fluoropolymer resin for coatings that can be cured at room temperature or at elevated temperatures. Because Lumiflon resins do not require heat curing, these topcoats can be applied in the factory or in the field. As transparent fluororesins, Lumiflon resins can be used to make both clear and pigmented coatings in more than 230 colors in high-gloss to flat finishes.
