Lundin spins multiple bits on NCS

Swedish headquartered Lundin Petroleum has started spinning two drill bits on the Norwegian Continental Shelf - on Alta, in the Barents Sea, and one on the Edvard Grieg discovery, in the Norwegian North Sea.

Both are appraisal wells. The well on Alta is the second appraisal well on the discovery.

The firm has also started drilling on the Zeppelin prospect, in southern North Sea, through partner and operator Wintershall.

Alta

Alta appraisal well 7220/11-3 in production license (PL) 609 is 4.3km south of Alta discovery well 7220/11-1 and 3.4km northeast of recently completed appraisal well 7220/11-2. The well's aims are to confirm the reservoir model and prove the presence of hydrocarbon columns and fluid contacts similar to those established in the Alta discovery well, and to test the reservoir properties of the Permian carbonates.

Total planned depth is 2070m using the semisubmersible drilling rig Island Innovator (pictured).

Edward Grieg

Edvard Grieg appraisal well 16/1-23 S, in PL338 in the southeastern part of the Edvard Grieg field, is about 2.4km southeast of the Edvard Grieg platform location. It is seeking to confirm the geological model in this part of the field to optimize drainage strategy and development well placement. It is also seeking to test for upside reserve potential in the field which is estimated to be up to gross 50 MMboe. Planned total depth is about 2200m, using the jackup rig Rowan Viking.

Zeppelin

The Zeppelin exploration well 10/4-1 in PL734, operated by Wintershall, is in the Norwegian southern North Sea, 35km southeast of the Yme field.

The well is seeking to prove the presence of hydrocarbons in sandstones of the Middle to Late Jurassic Vestland Group. Lundin Petroleum estimates the Zeppelin prospect to have the potential to contain unrisked, gross prospective resources of 152 MMboe.

Planned total depth is about 2300m and the well will be drilled using the Borgland Dolphin. Drilling is expected to take about 30 days.

Lundin Norway holds a 30% working interest in PL734. Wintershall Norge is the operator and holds a 40% with Centrica Resources holding the remaining 30%.
