Det Norske Oljeselskap has commenced drilling the Langlitinden prospect in production license (PL) 659, located 80km northeast of the Snøhvit field.
It is the company's first operated well in the Barents Sea.
The target for the well (7222/11-2) is to prove hydrocarbons in the Triassic, Kobbe sandstone formation on the Bjarmeland platform.
Partner Rocksource ASA estimates the Langlitinden prospect potentially contains 220MM boe unrisked, gross prospective resources.
The planned total depth is 2900m below mean sea level and the well will be drilled using the Transocean Barents. Drilling is expected to take about 50 days. The same structure was drilled in 2008, about 6km away and a small gas column was encountered in the Snadd formation.
In the Kobbe formation, two zones containing hydrocarbons were discovered: a 3m oil column, and a deeper, 11m oil and gas column.
The license was awarded in February 2012, in connection with the APA 2011 licensing round.
Det Norske Oljeselskap (operator) holds 30% working interest, with partners Lundin, with 20%, Petoro, with 30%, Atlantic Petroleum Norge, with 10%, Tullow Oil Norge, with 10%, Rocksource, with 5%, and Ithaca Petroleum Norge, with 5%.
