Artificial lift technologies examined

With nearly 40% of today’s oil production coming from mature fields and this figure set to rise according to the Wood Report, maximizing recovery is high on the agenda of oil and gas operators.

There is a significant portion of brown field operating costs related to lifting and maintenance of artificial lift equipment. Even with these additional costs, when problems arise the result can often lead to premature abandonment of fields, despite the fact that significant oil and gas reserves remain in their reservoirs.

Dr. Siegfried Müssig will discuss the measures that can be taken to combat the loss of reserves at next week’s SPE Aberdeen section technical meeting. Dr. Müssig is currently technology and quality manager with RAG Rohölaufsuchungs-AG and has spent over 30 years championing the use of innovative technologies where conventional solutions have failed. In this capacity, he was appointed as board member of the Ceradyne Inc. Group and PLEcon Engineering GmbH.  He is a guest lecturer at the University of Leoben, Austria and an active SPE member, as well as chairman of the German SPE section.

Ahead of his presentation, Dr Müssig said: “In order to combat early abandonment of mature fields, there are a number of measures that the industry would be advised to undertake. The presentation will provide a field case-study describing some of the processes required and giving a detailed insight into the basket of technical solutions and the commercial impact.”

Ross Lowdon, chairman of SPE Aberdeen, added: “As the distinguished publisher of 35 technical papers and six patents, his experience of product development and project management across the industry will provide Aberdeen’s oil industry professionals with an expert insight into the highly successful use of pioneering technologies in problem solving."

“Moving the Frontiers in Artificial Lift Technology in Mature Field Operations” is part of SPE Aberdeen’s program of monthly technical presentations, sponsored by Expro and Shell. The talk, followed by a networking dinner will take place from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesday, 26 November at the Douglas Hotel, Aberdeen.
