Lundin Norway has completed two appraisal wells on the Alta oil and gas discovery in license 609 the Barents Sea.

Wells 7220/11-4 and 7220/11-4 A were drilled using the Leiv Eiriksson semisubmersible drilling rig about in 402m water depth, 2km south of the Alta discovery well 7220/11-1, 190km northwest of Hammerfest, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD). The wells' objectives were to delineate the eastern flank of the discovery and 1km north.

Alta, part of a planned development, also taking in the Gohta field, was discovered in carbonate rocks in the Gipsdalen group in October 2014. Before its the latest appraisal wells on the field, wells 7220/11-4 and 7220/11-4 A, Lundin estimated Alta contained 20-64 MMcu m of recoverable oil equivalents, says the NPD.

Well 7220/11-4 encountered a 48m hydrocarbon column, of which 44m was an oil column, according to the NPD. Well 7220/11-4 A encountered a 54m hydrocarbon column, of which 44m was an oil column.

The NPD says reservoir quality through the oil column varied in both wells. Several zones have very good permeability. The hydrocarbon contacts were the same in both wells.

Pressure data showed the same hydrocarbon contacts as observed in previous wells drilled on the discovery and confirmed good communication over the Alta structure, said the NPD.

The wells were the 10th and 11th exploration wells on production license 609, which was awarded in the 21st licensing round in 2011.

The Leiv Eiriksson will now proceed to drill wildcat well 7220/6-3 in the northern part of production license 609.
