Major North Sea wins for EMAS

The subsea services division of global offshore contractor EMAS has won two major contracts offshore Norway.

EMAS AMC has been awarded an engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract, valued at approximately US$165 million, from Det norske oljeselskap ASA.

The contract is for rigid pipe-lay and related subsea work in the Ivar Aasen field in the Norwegian North Sea.

The firm has also won a contract from Statoil for the transport and installation of subsea templates for the Norwegian Sea’s deepest offshore project – the Aasta Hansteen field development.

Mr Lionel Lee, managing director/group CEO of EMAS, said: “The Ivar Aasen field is one of the largest oil discoveries on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in recent years and we are delighted with this important contract win.
"This win is the result of our committed strategy to become a leading global subsea construction player and validates our focus on our global subsea operations.”

Mr C J D’Cort, CEO of EMAS AMC said: “We are extremely pleased to be part of the Aasta Hansteen project, the deepest offshore development in the Norwegian Sea. EMAS AMC’s involvement is a reflection of the confidence in our subsea capabilities. This pioneering project continues our growing cooperation with Statoil on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. We look forward to working with Statoil in breaking new ground in the region."

The Ivar Aasen field, operated by Det norske, contains approximately 150 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe), and is located some 180 km offshore Stavanger, Norway. The contracted scope of work includes project management, detailed engineering and procurement, construction and installation of three 10 km rigid pipelines via reels, including spools, pipeline end terminations (PLETs) and seabed intervention.

The contract also has an option for EMAS AMC to procure and install a subsea power cable connecting the neighbouring Edvard Grieg platform to the Ivar Aasen platform.

Project management and engineering work will commence immediately and will be managed from EMAS AMC's office in Oslo. Offshore activities are scheduled to commence in 2015, with completion in 2016.

“Our involvement in this major project represents an important milestone for EMAS AMC, as it demonstrates our commitment to the North Sea and shows our strength as a fully integrated service provider within the subsea, umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF) segment," said Mr Svein Haug, Regional Head for EMAS AMC Europe and Africa.
"We are looking forward to working with Det norske and its license partners from planning to execution, and operating at the highest health, safety, environmental and quality (HSEQ) standards.”

The Aasta Hansteen field development, with a water depth of 1300 metres, is located in the Norwegian Sea, 300 km west of Bodø, Norway

EMAS AMC’s scope of work includes the transport and installation of two 4-slot templates and one single-slot template. All templates will be transported from Aker Solutions’ facilities in Sandnessjøen in Norway. EMAS AMC will utilise its advanced subsea construction vessel, Lewek Connector, for transport and installation work, and will partner local suppliers in Sandnessjøen for most of the required work preparations and vessel supplies.

“The Aasta Hansteen field is located in an area characterised by harsh weather conditions and deep waters," said Mr Svein Haug, Regional Head for EMAS AMC Europe and Africa.

"EMAS AMC’s Lewek Connector represents the perfect advanced subsea construction vessel for the job, with its stability in offshore operations, a crane capacity of 400 tonnes, and a water depth reach of 3000 metres."

Engineering and planning will be managed by EMAS AMC in Oslo. The offshore transport and installation work will take place in 2015.

EMAS AMC’s previous contract wins from Statoil include riser replacements on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, as well as a SURF (Subsea, Umbilical, Risers and Flowlines) contract for marine installation and pipe lay in Fram H-Nord, situated in the Troll C/Fram area in the northern part of the North Sea.

EMAS said: "This latest contract win reinforces EMAS AMC’s strong commitment in the North Sea. Recent awards on the Norwegian Continental Shelf include a contract from ABB for the installation of subsea power cables from the Troll A gas platform and a contract with Statoil to exercise options and perform additional work relating to prior subsea contracts."
