Chesapeake Energy appoints new CEO

May 20, 2013

Chesapeake Energy Corp. announced Robert Douglas “Doug” Lawler – senior vice president of international and deepwater operations for Anadarko Petroleum – to succeed Aubrey McClendon as CEO and member of the board of directors for Chesapeake, effective June 17.

Chesapeake said Lawler was chosen because he’s a proven oil and gas executive with a great deal of experience in asset development, operations management and engineering. Anadarko is currently the second-largest independent upstream company in the US with a $45 billion market capitalization.

Lawler, a petroleum engineer with 25 years of experience working with Anadarko in the Exploration and Petroleum industry, said that he is excited for the opportunity to join the Chesapeake team.

"I am honored and excited to be joining Chesapeake Energy with its unparalleled asset portfolio, focused management team and very talented and dedicated employees," Lawler said of his appointment. "There is significant value in Chesapeake’s asset base and the growth potential of the Company is tremendous. I look forward to accelerating the momentum that the Chesapeake team has built to generate value for our shareholders in the years ahead."

Chesapeake, based in Oklahoma, will discontinue the Office of the Chairman with the addition of Lawler, and the three executives who held the interim position will continue to operate in their respective roles. The company is the second-largest natural gas producer in the US, behind Exxon Mobil Corp., which is based in Irving, Texas.
