A North Sea oil worker has died after falling from Taqa Bratani's Harding platform in the early hours of this morning.

The worker was involved in maintenance activity on the platform. He was recovered from the sea by a support vessel and transferred to Gilbert Bain Hospital in Shetland by helicopter. Next of kin has been informed.

In a statement issued this morning, Taqa Bratani said: "Our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of our colleague at this extremely sad time. TAQA is providing its fullest support to all those involved.

The rest of the 108 people on board the Harding platform have been accounted for and are safe.

TAQA is liaising with Police Scotland and other relevant authorities to investigate the incident, which happened at about 2.17am.

Harding is owned and operated by Taqa. It is 320km north-east of Aberdeen. Taqa took over operatorship of Harding in June last year, after buying BP's stake in it. The acquisition was expected to add 20,000 boe/d of production.

Taqa said further updates on the incident would be issued as more information becomes available.

According to Reuters, the firm has decided to shut down the platform, which produces about 12,000 boe/d, and reducing the number of staff on board to 35.
