One person is dead and 60 were injured following an event related to the Mexican Petroleum Congress (Congreso Mexicano del Petróleo) being held in Guadalajara last night, according to a report by the Zapopan municipal government’s Facebook page.

The event, called Tapatia Night, was held in a tent just outside the TelMex Auditorium for the conference's approximately 8000 attendees. The area was struck by “atypical" wind and rain, which had enough force to collapse the tent that was located on the esplanade on Avenida Parres Arias. The flood waters damaged some 120 vehicles and downed 51 trees.

A moment of silence was held this morning at the conference for the engineer who died, Cristo Nomar Perez Chavarria. Local media reports say Perez Chavarria was 80 years old and a native of Tabasco state.

Of the injured, only 36 were transferred to hospitals with minor injuries, according to a statement by the TelMex Auditorium.
