Power has been restored to BP’s Thunder Horse production platform in the US Gulf of Mexico.

The company has started redeploying offshore personnel to Thunder Horse, a BP spokesperson confirmed to OE. Those workers were evacuated after an electrical outage occurred on 18 September. Safety will remain a priority as BP continues to assess systems and resumes normal operations, the spokesperson said.
Discovered in 1999, Thunder Horse came online in 2008. Since that time, BP has worked to improve production from Thunder Horse, including a water injection project in May 2016 to recover an additional 65 MMboe from the field.
In December 2016, BP fired up production from the Thunder Horse South Expansion (THSX), which was expected to add an estimated 50,000 gross boe/d. THSX was completed 11 months ahead of schedule and US$150 million under the project’s $1 billion budget.
The Thunder Horse field sits inside Mississippi Canyon blocks 778/822 in the Boarshead basin, 150mi southeast of New Orleans in water depths ranging from 5800-6500ft. It consists of two adjacent fields (North and South) with reservoirs in the Upper Miocene turbidite sandstones.
The development consists of subsea wells producing to a permanently moored, floating semisubmersible production, drilling and quarters (PDQ) facility. The PDQ, which is BP’s largest facility in the deepwater Gulf, has capacity for 250,000 bbl gross and 200 MMcf/d gross of natural gas.
