Lundin Norway's first appraisal well in the Barents Sea Gohta oil discovery offshore Norway has confirmed the presence of oil and gas, says a partner on the well Noreco.

Two production tests were also undertaken, the firm said today (21 July). The test of the gas zone was positive, whereas the results from the oil zone are non-conclusive. Further evaluation of the discovery is underway and a new appraisal well could be scheduled for 2015.

Appraisal well 7120/1-4S was drilled from the semisubmersible drilling rig Island Innovator (pictured) in 332m water depth in the Gohta structure, 5.3km north-west of the discovery well 7120/1-3, drilled in 2013.

According to previous estimates, the contingent resources in the discovery could be 111-232MMboe. Based on current assessments, the appraisal well will not result in any changes to this estimate.

Lundin is operator with 40% interest, with partner Noreco Norway (20%), and Det norske oljeselskap (40%).
