Karoon flows Kangaroo-2 off Brazil

Production testing on Karoon Gas Australia's Kangaroo-2 appraisal well offshore Brazil saw flow rates reach 3700 stb/d on a choke, says the firm.

The Kangaroo-2 appraisal well, in exploration Block S-M-1165, in the Santos Basin, confirmed a 250m gross (135m net) oil column in Paleocene and Maastrichtian aged reservoirs, as announced in November.

Production tests, using the Olinda Star semisubmersible drilling rig (pictured), over the Paleocene A, B and C oil bearing sandstone reservoirs have now been completed, reaching flowrates of 1820-3700 stb/d through 40/64-88/64" chokes.

The oil produced at 33° API oil with zero CO2, H2S, water or sand produced on a first production test and 31° API oil with zero CO2, H2S, water or sand produced on a second.

Karoon Managing Director Robert Hosking said “Karoon is very pleased with the production testing results from Kangaroo-2. Based on the flow rates achieved in both the Paleocene and Maastrichtian reservoirs, a vertical production well could produce 6000-8000 stb/d from the combined reservoirs. In addition, horizontal production wells could be expected to produce at higher rates.”

Preparations are underway to start a side-track program in both down-dip and up-dip locations to better define the resource size and recovery factors.

The Kangaroo-2 appraisal well is in exploration Block S-M-1165, about 300m up-dip and 4km south of Kangaroo-1 and is the first well in the Santos Basin exploration and appraisal drilling campaign.

Karoon is the operator and has a 65% interest in the jointly held Block S-M-1165, Santos Basin, Brazil. Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp holds the remaining 35% interest.
