Seaway 7 to Install Cables at Hornsea Two

Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Seaway 7 has won a contract from Ørsted's Optimus Wind to install the entire inner array grid cable system for the Hornsea Two offshore wind farm project in the UK sector of the North Sea.

Seaway 7 parent company Subsea 7 said the contract is worth between $50 million and $150 million.

The 1,386 megawatt capacity Hornsea Two offshore wind farm project is located approximately 90 kilometers off the Yorkshire coast and consists of 165 Siemens Gamesa wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 8.4 megawatts.

The inner array grid cable system consists of 165 66-kilovolt copper-core submarine composite cables with a total length of more than 420 kilometers. In addition to the submarine cable installation works, Seaway 7 will undertake a pre-installation submarine cable route survey, perform pre-installation boulder clearance activities and execute post-lay trenching services, it said.

Project engineering will commence immediately and offshore activities are due to commence in 2021.

Hornsea Two offshore wind farm is scheduled to come online in 2022.

Steph McNeill, Subsea 7’s SVP Renewables and Heavy Lifting, said, “We look forward to continuing our collaborative relationship with Ørsted to install the entire inner array grid cable system on the Hornsea Two offshore wind farm project. This award follows on from our reliable performance and successful completion of the installation activities for the Hornsea One offshore wind farm project earlier this year.”
