Jumbo Bags Wind Farm Work in Taiwan

Wednesday, June 12, 2019

Dutch firm Jumbo said it has been awarded the contract to transport and install wind turbine generator (WTG) substructures for Taiwan's first large multi-megawatt offshore wind project.

The 640-megawatt (MW) Yunlin offshore wind farm will be developed 8 kilometers off the Taiwanese west coast and will consist of 80 8MW turbines manufactured by Siemens Gamesa.

Jumbo's transport and installation (T&I) contract, awarded earlier this year by Yunneng Windpower Co., a Taiwanese subsidiary of Germany-headquartered wpd AG, is the largest ever for the Netherlands-based heavy-lift shipping and offshore installation contractor.

“This is a proud moment for Jumbo,” said the company's managing director, Michael Kahn. “The Yunlin project is the largest single contract we have been awarded in our 50-year history, and it is particularly special as it allows us to combine the strengths of both our shipping and offshore divisions. Our specialized teams, together with our partners, will provide a unique integrated T&I solution – from quayside to seabed – for Yunneng.”

Jumbo said its work scope for the Yunlin project includes the transportation of 40 monopiles, and 120 monopile-sections, from Germany to Taiwan; transportation of 40 transition pieces from The Netherlands to Taiwan; and offshore installation of 80 transition pieces (TP), including grouting, in Taiwan.

The company will use its K-class and J-class vessels as well as other third-party heavy-lift vessels (HLV) and deck carriers for shipping the monopiles, sections and TPs. It will use its J-class vessels with DP2 capabilities for the TP installations.

Preparation and planning works are underway, Jumbo said, and the first transportation is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2019, with installation scheduled to take place in mid-2020.
