Vår Energi to Remove Jotun B Platform

Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) has given Vår Energi AS consent for the removal and disposal of Jotun B platform in the North Sea offshore Norway.

The consent, with reference to the Management Regulations Section 25 (4) item e, is granted on the basis of documentation submitted in connection with the application, including the assumptions and obligations this represents.

The Petroleum Act requires the developer of a field to pay for and to carry out – including full or partial removal of facilities and equipment after the production period has ended, according to PSA.

The removal work must take place pursuant to the HSE regulations for the petroleum activities, and on the basis of considerations including consent and decommissioning plans, it said.

Vår Energi is operator and 100% owner of the Jotun field in PL 027 B is located in the North Sea, 200 kilometers west of Stavanger. The field was developed with two installations, a wellhead platform Jotun B and a production vessel Jotun A.

Production at Jotun was permanently shut down in December 2016. Decommissioning activities on the Jotun B installation were initiated in 2015 and will proceed until 2020.

The Jotun A facility provides spare production capacity. In order to utilize this capacity, Balder and Ringhorne are connected to Jotun A via a gas pipeline, allowing parts of the Balder and Ringhorne volumes to produce via the Jotun FPSO. The plan is to extend production in the Balder and Ringhorne area towards 2045, and the Jotun FPSO will be relocated and life extended.
