German technical service provider TÜV NORD announced  that it had won a contract from Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) to certify one of the largest offshore wind turbines in the world.

The first of these new 10 MW turbines are expected to be ready for the market in 2022, said a press note.

With a diameter of 193 metres and a capacity of 10 megawatts, the SG 10.0-193 DD is one of the world's largest offshore wind turbines. Thanks to the larger rotor blades, with the length of almost a football field, the turbine produces 30 percent more energy annually than its eight-megawatt predecessor.

The turbine can thus supply around 10,000 average European households with electricity annually. TÜV NORD takes over the type certification of the SG 10.0-193 DD and herewith continues the close partnership with Siemens Gamesa.

The first prototype of the SG 10.0-193 DD is planned to be erected this year. For the prototype and type certification, TÜV NORD evaluates the design of the offshore wind turbine and issues the respective certificates if the conclusion on the results is positive.

"With the SG 10.0-193 DD, Siemens Gamesa is launching one of the most powerful offshore wind turbines on the market”, explained Silvio Konrad, member of the Industry Service division management and responsible for the strategic business area Energy.

"We are delighted that Siemens Gamesa, following the certification of the turbines from G2 and D3 onshore platforms, is now placing its trust in us to accompany its offshore developments in a spirit of partnership,” Silvio added.
