The Intervention & Coiled Tubing Association’s European Chapter (ICoTA) will examine the role of wireless communication technology and its benefits in well intervention at its next lunch and learn session on 20 May.
The presentation, which will be delivered by oilfield services giant Weatherford, will focus on the development of RFID (radio frequency identification) technology enabling seamless communication with a vast array of tools including under-reamers, barrier and isolation valves, circulation and stimulation sleeves.
ICoTA chair Kelly Murray said: “The use of RFID technology can be traced back to the 1940s, yet it is now playing an impressive role in the oil and gas industry following recent inventive development and application. This presentation will provide a fantastic insight into the current developments being made and the potential benefits it may have in next generation products and services.
“Weatherford is one of the leading companies within the industry and one which is playing a crucial role in the continued development and application of this kind of wireless technology so it is a real pleasure to have them speaking at the event.”
It is believed that using RFID technology will have significant benefits including reduced risk and cost when carrying out offshore operations. The presentation will outline the RFID technology platform, review case studies of past operations and highlight what functionality and benefits future tools could provide to operators.

The lunch and learn session will be held at The Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen on Tuesday 20th May and will run from 11:45 to 1:45pm.
