Petronas has laid the keel of its second floating LNG vessel, the Petronas Floating LNG2, in Geoje Island, South Korea.
JGC Group and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), the consortium leading the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of PFLNG2, marked the keel laying milestone with a ceremony at the SHI shipyard.
In June, Petronas celebrated the official steel cutting of PFLNG2 also in SHI shipyard. The Malaysian oil major said the keel laying signifies the formal recognition of the start of the group’s mega construction phase of the PFLNG2 with a collective weight of 134,000-tonne.
Designed to tap on natural gas potential in the Rotan field, 130km offshore Sabah, PFLNG2 has a capacity of 1.5 MTPA, and can operate in water depths ranging from 500-1500m. Expected to commission in 2018, the production unit is able to house up to 150 personnel.
The smaller PFLNG1 unit, on the other hand, will make possible the liquefaction, production and offloading processing of natural gas in the Kanowit gas field, 180km offshore Bintulu, Sarawak in 70-200m water depth. PFLNG1, with a capacity of 1.2 MTPA is expected to commission in early 2016.
Last week, the group marked another milestone at its Bukit Tua and Kepodang fields in Indonesia. First oil and gas production was achieved boosting its venture into the Indonesian oil and gas sector.
