Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) has granted Eni permission to restart production at its Goliat development after verifying the company has addressed electrical safety issues at the field.

In October, PSA had ordered Eni to shut-in production after an audit revealed high fault rates for Ex motors of 38%; 3.5% of which represented serious faults in Eni’s own assessment. PSA ordered Eni to complete a systematic survey of potential ignition sources related to electric Ex motors. Eni also was ordered to implement the necessary technical, operational and organizational measures to reduce as much as possible the threat of ignition from all faults.

Eni, and partner Statoil met with PSA officials on 6 December to outline plans to bring the field back online. Based on the results of the meeting and PSA’s own verification and overall assessments, PSA says Eni has complied with the order.

Located in production licenese 229, Goliat is the first oil-producing field in the Barents Sea. The Eni-operated field includes 200 MMboe of resources and is being developed via a floating production storage and offloading unit. The field started production in March 2016 after several years of delays and 50% cost overruns. Goliat is located 85km northwest of Hammerfest and 50km southeast of the Snohvit field.
