GE wins Petronas FLNG 2 contract

Malaysia’s national oil and gas company Petronas awarded GE Oil & Gas a contract to supply gas turbine-driven compressor train and mechanical drive technology for the second floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility off the coast of East Malaysia.

The second Petronas FLNG (PFLNG 2) is located at the Rotan field, northeast of Sabah.

The contract is part of a global frame agreement for equipment supply between the GE and Petronas. GE says it was awarded the contract primarily because its turbomachinery has a successful track record of supporting offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) production.

Upon the terms of agreement, GE will supply four of its PGT25+G4 gas turbine generator systems and two nitrogen trains featuring two LM6000-PF+ 2BCL907 aeroderivative gas turbines in mechanical-drive mode.

Commercial operation is expected to begin in the 3Q 2017. Once operational in 1Q 2018, the PFLNG 2 facility is expected to produce about 1.5mtpa of LNG.

Petronas reached the final investment decision to move forward with the project in February 2014, which will support the industrial sector’s growing demand for natural gas in Peninsular Malaysia.

Petronas also selected GE’s turbocompressor equipment to power the company’s first FLNG, PFLNG 1, which is currently being constructed in South Korea. It‘s designed for a production capacity of 1.2 million-tonne/yr of LNG.

In late September, Petronas began lifting the first topside module for PFLNG 1 at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea. Power generation and control functions instruments were installed on the 2000-tonne module. Petronas appointed Technip and DSME to jointly develop the 365m-long, 60m-wide, and 33m-high PFLNG1 facility. Once the construction and installation phases are completed in 2015, PFLNG1 will be moored in Kanowit field, 180km offshore Sarawak.
